More hazards of checking your blog at work

When people at work find out that I write a blog, they look incredulous when they find out that I am writing about a computer game.  I always try to give them the indignant look but I often end up dissolving in giggles, as not EVERYONE understands my passion for this "computer game".

But I digress.  Just yesterday I was reading Toys of Azeroth, and Hyperious must have adsense or something, because there are some funny ads on his site.  There was a huge flashy advertisement about "Want to meet Asian girls?" with some pics of pretty girls with pretty cleavage, and of course that is the moment when people walk past my computer and say "What are you reading? TOYS of what?  And Asian girls?"  Yeah, well I had fun trying to explain that.  They were more likely to believe that I was looking for sex toys that suit Asian girls, instead of "I'm just catching up on my World of Warcraft reading, and well Azeroth is the name of the land in Warcraft, and yes those are cannons, no no they're not some phallic thing.. and it's just an ad, I swear I had nothing to do with..."

You get the picture.

Just now I was looking at my blog traffic, because sometimes I find some of my blog lurkers that way, and then I can go visit them and hopefully coax them to talk to me so I can get to know them better.  Anyway, a few had come from this site.. meendo.com something... so I wondered if it was a new person.

So I clicked it.  the full URL came up and it had the search items TEEN + AMATEUR.    Yes you can see where this is going, but I was oblivious to it at the time.  I was sitting in the operating theatre in a long operation and I thought I had some time to kill on my blog.

Taking a while to load...  oh here we go.

WOAH. Videos of beaver shots.  Lots of them.  I clap a hand to my mouth and start giggling and quickly close the window.  Teen Amateur porn stuff. EEEK.  Of course, I'm here looking furtively around again to make sure nobody saw it, but someone saw me smiling.

"What are you smiling about?" he asked me.

"Oh nothing," I giggled.  "Just accidentally opened some porn from my blog."

Oh man.  That came out SO wrong.

"You have porn on your blog??"

"No, no someone came to my site from a porn site.  Either that or they hacked the stats."

That person looked at me really dubiously.  "OK, whatever you say."  Hmm.  Why does EVERYONE always think I'm looking at stuff like that!!!

Oh, it's just dawned on me.  One of YOU readers has been reading porn and then coming to my site.  LOL!!!

Well, whoever it was, you caught me off guard today :P

Or maybe it was a hack.  /grin

  3. Haha, that's hilarious!
I never imagined my blog could be perceived as a porn site... And yeah, I use AdSense... But the ads are generated between relevance to the blog's content and relevance to search history on that particular computer.
So if that computer in the operating room is widely accessible, perhaps someone else is interested in cute Asian girls. ;)

  4. I've had similar things happen to me, too. Turns out there are companies out there that specialize in creating fake entries in your blog stats, so that your stats will say some site linked to you. It's not really hacking, but they game the system somehow. I think the goal is to somehow increase the google ranking of the porn site (though I dunno, sometimes SEM goes way over my head). Anyway, here are some articles on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referer_spam http://www.businesshut.com/spam/google-analytics-referrer-spam/

    2. I haven't had porn sites referrers, but I have had strange websites that have NOTHING to do with WoW and just seem to want hits. So this sounds about right.

    3. Ahh! I came here to say that I also had been mysteriously referred to by the same site Navi got. this makes a lot more sense than a sexy video website linking me XD

  5. Hahaha that's a hilarious story! I too look at blog stats from time to time to see who my readers are - and sometimes the weirdest links show up there. I'm always too scared to click and find out! XD

  8. Navi, after your Moonguard post I learned my lesson to be VERY careful checking your blog at work! LOL! Oh, the irony! And trust me-- you will never pin down the twists and turns on the Internet. A few days ago I got someone looking for "Therazane Porn." Dios mio. Hey, to each his own!

  9. Yeah, I post one picture of a naked tree and now the most popular search terms -- actually the only search terms other than the name of the blog -- is "druid porn".

    Yeesh.

On the upside, Navi, at least you were relatively sheltered. I was showing a room full of sailors how to use the internet to look up information back in '99.... I went to www.whitehouse.com instead of www.whitehouse.gov. The .Gov site is the official one for the President of the US. The .com is a porn site.

    So...

Yeah, beaver shots... but beaver shots on the big screen with a bunch of sailors in the room taking my class. I didn't live that one down for a while.

    1. Well at least I can say I know someone who taught sailors how to look for porn on the internet. LOL.

  10. I'm sorry, Navi, I--I have to say it.

THE INTERNET IS FOR PORN! :-P

  11. Haha, I hope the above comment was in reference to Avenue Q, because it was FANTASTIC!

I came across this blog post because I was following up on my traffic links and thought a porn pop-up had happened... in my main window? So i closed it and clicked the link again, and THEN I realised. Some research on the topic has me a bit less worried, but still creeped out. Someone was on the site before clicking my blog, you say??

  12. This is EXACTLY why I use an RSS feed instead of going to each site.. yeah, maybe it cuts down the hits for the blog (unless I comment) but it is much more convenient and I do not have to worry about sidebar ad's and stuff like that.

  14. Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your article seem to be running off the screen in Internet explorer.
I'm not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I thought I'd post to let you know.
The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon.
    Thanks
